Science Behind the Method
Science Behind the Method
Many parents of neurodivergent children are told to simply “manage the symptoms.”
But what if the behaviours, struggles, and emotional challenges your child experiences are actually connected to how different parts of the brain are communicating?
At Connected Kidz, our programs are inspired by the work of Dr Robert Melillo and focus on supporting functional development through targeted activities, movement, sensory exercises, and hemispheric integration strategies.
Understanding Functional Disconnection
The Melillo Method™ is based on the theory of functional disconnection.
This means certain areas of the brain may not be communicating efficiently with one another, even though the brain itself is structurally healthy.
When communication between brain regions is inconsistent or delayed, it can affect areas such as:
Attention and focus
Emotional regulation
Learning and memory
Coordination and balance
Sensory processing
Social interaction
Behaviour and meltdowns
Sleep and nervous system regulation
Rather than viewing these challenges as isolated symptoms, the Melillo Method™ looks at how the brain and body work together as a connected system.
The Role of Brain Hemispheres
The brain has two hemispheres — the left and right side — and both need to work together efficiently for healthy development.
Sometimes one side may develop more slowly or become underactive compared to the other. This imbalance can contribute to challenges with:
Emotional control
Impulse regulation
Coordination
Processing speed
Language development
Executive functioning
Anxiety and overwhelm
The goal is not to “fix” a child, but to support more balanced communication and integration between brain regions.
Retained Primitive Reflexes
Primitive reflexes are automatic movements babies are born with to help early survival and development.
As children grow, these reflexes are expected to integrate naturally.
When they remain active beyond infancy, they may interfere with development and nervous system regulation.
Retained primitive reflexes can sometimes be linked with:
Poor balance or coordination
Fidgeting and hyperactivity
Emotional outbursts
Difficulty sitting still
Challenges with reading or writing
Sensory sensitivities
Motion sickness
Poor posture or fatigue
At Connected Kidz, coaches may include reflex integration activities as part of a broader support plan.
Why Movement Matters
The brain develops through stimulation and experience.
Movement, rhythm, balance, coordination, and sensory input all play an important role in strengthening neural pathways.
Targeted exercises may help activate underperforming brain regions and encourage better communication between different systems of the body and brain.
Programs inspired by the Melillo Method™ often include:
Balance and coordination exercises
Primitive reflex activities
Eye tracking exercises
Rhythm and timing work
Sensory activities
Cognitive challenges
Breathing and regulation strategies
These activities are tailored to the individual and designed to support gradual functional development over time.
A Whole-Child Approach
Every child is different.
That’s why Connected Kidz takes a whole-child approach that considers:
Developmental history
Sensory processing
Emotional regulation
Coordination and motor skills
Learning challenges
Lifestyle and environmental factors
Rather than focusing on labels alone, we focus on understanding the underlying functional challenges that may be contributing to daily struggles.
Supporting Families with Hope
Many families come to Connected Kidz after feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or unheard.
Our goal is to provide education, practical strategies, and supportive coaching that empowers parents to better understand their child and support their development naturally.
Progress takes consistency, patience, and the right support, but small changes over time can create meaningful improvements in confidence, regulation, learning, and daily life.
Learn More About Connected Kidz
Connected Kidz offers programs and coaching inspired by the Melillo Method™ for parents, children, and professionals wanting to better understand neurodevelopment and functional disconnection.
Whether your child struggles with meltdowns, focus, emotional regulation, coordination, or sensory processing, there may be underlying developmental factors worth exploring.
